Blackjack Rules
It is basically you versus the dealer and as long as you do not go over 21 and have the highest hand, you win. Cards 2 through 10 are worth their face value and face cards (King, Queen and Jack) are worth 10. The ace is worth one or eleven. When you have a hand like Ace – six, it is worth 7 or 17 and is often called soft seventeen where a 10 – seven would be a hard 17 because it can only be 17. The table will usually have a minimum bet and a maximum bet allowed.
There are many versions of blackjack and with each, the way the cards are dealt vary as well as some rules. With basic blackjack, the hand starts by placing your bet in your player box. The dealer will then deal a card to each player and one to themselves and then another to each player and one more to themselves. Only one of the dealer’s cards is face up so all players can see it. If the face up card is an ace, the dealer will if anyone wishes to surrender and for ½ your original bet you can quit the hand. Another option is insurance where you can place a bet up to ½ your first bet and if the dealer has blackjack, it pays 2:1. After the surrender is complete, the dealer will check for a blackjack and if they have blackjack the players left lose their bets, if there is no blackjack, play continues. Play starts with the first player and stays on that player until they either stand (take no more cards) or bust. Then the play moves to the next box. Players can stand on any amount but there are blackjack strategies to help players. If the player’s first two cards are the same, they can split them into two separate hands by placing another bet of the same size as the first. You can continue to split as long as the cards match (some casinos have a limit on how many). If your first two cards add up to 9, 10, or 11, you can double down which means to place a bet the same size as your first and you will only get one more card. So when it’s your turn, you options are to Hit (take a card) or Stand unless you double down (if 9, 10, 11) or split (if cards match). You can continue to draw cards unless you go over 21 in which case you bust.
After all the players have completed, the dealer will turn over their other card and must continue to draw cards until they have a 17 or higher. Once they have 17 -21, they pay anyone with a higher hand by matching their bet. If a player gets blackjack, they pay 3-2 and ties are a push (no winner).
