Poker History
Poker is the booming and is one of the favorite home games all over the globe. When people think of the first poker, they think of the old western days. Although it is argued over when the game first began, it is known that playing cards were invented in 900A.D. by the Chinese and they also invented paper money.

Historians believe that cards are based on the Chinese dominoes and that at some point the game pieces made the move from tile to paper. By the late 14th century, card playing had infected the world arriving in Spain and Italy from Egypt. The first decks only had 20 cards. Based on the existing deck, the Tarot Deck immersed adding 22 trump cards. The suits of these early decks were Swords, Baton/Clubs, Cups and Coins called Latin suits. The early English decks started with these same suits but by 1480 the Spades, Hearts, Clubs and Diamonds were adopted.

The French who settled in New Orleans learned "As Nas" and then connected it to their game "Poque". Poque is a card game of betting and bluffing.

A 52 card deck emerged in the 1830’s, and poker rules were formulated and written down. It became a favorite in the Old West Saloons. Several players quickly learned that great wealth could be won at this game. Card games often involved shoot outs. Wild Bill Hickok played poker for a living and moved often after disputes. On Aug 2 1876, he ended up in a game with his back to the saloon door. Jack McCall came in, circled the table and then shot Wild Bill in the back. His hand fell – a two pair hand of 2 black aces and 2 black eights. Now that hand is widely known as the Dead Man’s Hand.

In 1910, Nevada made it illegal to run a poker game. However, it was declared that draw poker was a game of skill and therefore did not apply to the anti gambling law. Stud poker was illegal as it was considered a game of chance. Draw poker boomed and more draw games emerged. In 1931, Nevada changed its law and became the only state to legalize casinos until 1978 when Atlantic City joined in.

It would probably be fair to say that poker has more variations than another game. It‘s a game that anyone can play at any age, enter any event and become an instant millionaire or event the World Series Champion.
